O gueto

« Ghetto life does not sediment community. Sharing stigma and public humiliation does not make the sufferers into brothers; it feeds mutual derision, contempt and hatred. […] No “collective buffer” can be forged in the contemporary ghettos for the single reason that the ghetto experience dissolves solidarity and destroys mutual trust before they have been given a chance to take roots. A ghetto is not a greenhouse of community feelings. It is on the contrary a laboratory of social disintegration, atomization and anomie. […] To sum up: ghetto means the impossibility of community. »
